Sand Dance acid etching and aquatint by Leo Foster
Eastgate Studio is honoured to present Leo Foster: A Retrospective, a celebration of the life and work of the much-loved printmaker Leo Foster (1962–2025). This special exhibition brings together an extensive collection of Leo’s prints, gathered with care by members of the Hull Print Collective. Although his family have kept a small selection, the sheer scale of the remaining work, reveals the extraordinary dedication and creative energy that shaped Leo’s practice over many decades.

The works, currently being inventoried and safely stewarded by members of the printmaking community, reflect Leo’s unmistakable visual language and his deep commitment to printmaking. The exhibition will also include a treasured “caravan” print kindly loaned by Rachel, a former Hull College technician and tutor who worked closely with Leo.

This retrospective offers colleagues, friends, and admirers the opportunity to reconnect with Leo’s work and to acquire pieces that hold personal significance. All prints will be available for purchase, with proceeds, after a reduced 30% gallery commission, donated to Dove House Hospice, in accordance with the wishes of Leo’s family. Studio members who are caring for prints ahead of the exhibition are also welcome to make a donation should they wish to keep a piece.
Leo Foster
More than a survey of an artistic career, this exhibition stands as a testament to Leo’s generosity, humour, and influence within the region’s printmaking community. We invite all who knew him, and those discovering his work for the first time, to join us in celebrating his legacy.
