Wood Engraving Workshop

 Two‑Session Course with Nic Stoker, supported by Susan Leeson

This two‑part workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of wood engraving using traditional tools and end‑grain wood blocks. The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as artists looking to expand their printmaking skills.

Dates and Times

Both sessions must be booked as a pair:

  • Session 1: Thursday 23 April, 11am–2pm

  • Session 2: Thursday 7 May, 11am–2pm

Course Content

Across the two sessions, participants will cover:

  • Overview of wood engraving and its tools

  • Safe and effective tool handling

  • Mark‑making, texture and tonal techniques

  • Planning and engraving on end‑grain blocks

  • Inking and hand‑printing methods

  • Editioning and finishing prints

Materials

All materials required for the workshop are provided, including specialist wood blocks from Chris Daunt, Lyons engraving tools , inks and papers. Participants may bring sketches or reference material if they wish.

Studio Membership

The workshop fee includes a one‑month membership to Eastgate Studio. Membership provides access to the print studio during open access sessions.  This offers participants the opportunity to continue working independently after the workshop.

  • Materials are not included in the membership

  • Studio access during membership is £15 per session

Who the Workshop is for

The course is appropriate for beginners, practising artists, illustrators and anyone interested in detailed, process‑based printmaking.

Pre-course information

For image preparation please bring small sketches or images with line drawing and textured marks.
